The volunteer programme in a nutshell
At our various centres and chapters, children are paired with volunteers who serve as learning partners in the Shine Literacy Hour Programme. Most children attend two sessions a week, working with a different learning partner in each. These volunteers assist children in becoming better writers and readers by following the established Shine Literacy methods and using the supplied resources.
Often, the continuity and stability that children experience in this learning setting are worlds apart from the reality of their disrupted homes. The unique relationship forged here between the child and their learning partner is often the greatest driver of progress. For this reason, we ask that volunteers commit to the programme for a minimum of six months.
To prepare volunteers for this rewarding journey, we have them observe at least one Shine Literacy Hour Programme session in action and undergo full training in the ideals and methodology behind the programme. The Shine Literacy Hour Handbook serves as a go-to guide when volunteers are on the job, whilst occasional in-depth training sessions provide extra support throughout the year. We also encourage volunteers to learn from one another through means of regular check-ins and idea sharing.
If you believe in the power of literacy and want to make a real impact on our children’s future, we invite you to join us as a volunteer.
